The Caribbean

The Caribbean is a group of around 7000 islands, islets, reefs and caves in the Caribbean Sea and is also known as the West Indies. It includes twenty-five territories and sovereign states, overseas departments and dependencies. The region is also well known for sea pirates.

These islands are beautiful and attract a number of tourists. The scenery is breathtaking and a visual treat for all. Some of the islands of the West Indies that attract tourists are:

Antigua: Nearly 300 years ago, when the British Admiral Horatio Nelson wanted to hide his fleet, he found all that he required to conceal the fleet in Antigua. The coastline of Antigua offers safe harbor, and has a protective wall of coral reef that is almost unbroken. These features now have helped transform Antigua into a major tourist spot in the Caribbean. What once proved as difficult for the marauders to scale is today proving as an adventurous playground for the trekkers. The coral reefs are one of the best spot for snorkelers and scuba divers.

Barbados: It was under British rule from its first settlement in 1627 to its independence in 1966, and these unbroken centuries of dominion left a legacy of British heritage. The English are still present in a small but thriving community of settler’s descendants. More than 70% of the islanders are of African descent, and the more flamboyant, rich African heritage also pervades local life.

Jamaica: It is the land of reggae and rum, wearing a mantle of roughshod romance that attracts travelers the world over looking to escape the routine of daily life. The landscape is a mosaic of palmed golden beaches and a beautiful mountainous interior. Music is the heartbeat of Jamaica; nearly every place is upbeat with rhythms pulsing through the air.

Puerto Rico: Is the island of the Caribbean that has a rich heritage of Spanish culture in the shape of the largest and best-preserved complex of Spanish colonial architecture in the region. There are a number of Cathedrals, museums, and stately Spanish squares on the island. All these historical structures create an ambience of romance and colonial grandeur. The island offers an alternative city life experience in the form of several quiet country resort areas, small resort islands just off the coast, and protected ecosystems, that form a part of the island of Puerto Rico. The island offers many recreational activities to the tourists. They can spend days exploring the historic sights, spectacular diving and fishing excursions, hiking and trekking, golfing, gambling and even dancing to the infectious rhythm of the salsa beat.

Trinidad and Tobago: Is the island of music and festivals. This is the land where carnival, calypso, steel pan music, and the limbo dance took birth. It has a rich and varied landscape and natural history. The island is a fusion of many cultures which reflects in its architecture, art, fashion, food, festivals, and music which has been derived from this fusion of cultures.

These are just a handful few of the vast chain where sunsets melt hearts and thrill the eyes. To every tourist these islands can give them a satisfaction of visiting paradise on earth.
