It is very much the 'in' thing to have scented candles or air fresheners in
our homes and they are so popular because, quite simply, they make us feel
better; either more relaxed or more revitalized, depending how we need to
change our mood. This is, in fact, aromatherapy because, in the wider sense
of the word, it is simply using scent for an advantageous result.
The actual definition of aromatherapy is the breathing in or bodily use of
essential oils that have been made from plants. They are designed to make us
feel balanced, restored or rejuvenated and they can heighten the mind, body
or spirit. It is not only flowers that can make these oils; they can also be
made from the seeds, roots, barks, twigs and rinds of the plants. They work
by stimulating the immune system thus helping it to heal the body.
Aromatherapy is so personal that one oil can be right for one person and
completely wrong for another with the same condition but might cure them of
a different complaint. There are, in fact, instances of an oil working well
at one time of the day and not at another. In short, it's very
dependent on mood and surroundings.
The three ways in which aromatherapy can be used are massage, cosmetic and
olfactory (smelling). The essential oils are all reduced in concentration
with either a carrier oil or water and there are many carrier oils that
again may or may not be suitable for individuals. These simple oils include
sweet almond, olive, rose hip, sesame, sunflower or
avocado.
For the most effective use of essential oils massage therapy is probably the
best option. The body and mind benefit from the massage by healing hands
plus the essential oils being absorbed right through the skin. Cosmetic
aromatherapy blends the oils with skin and hair lotions to some, but not
great effect and olfactory aromatherapy brings the oils into the environment
by breathing them in. They are usually placed in a dish over a candle and
the vapors are then inhaled.
Written evidence of the use of aromatherapy goes back to ancient Egypt times
and shows the use of plants and oils for ceremonial, medicinal and cosmetic
purposes and were the reason for many of the most profitable trade routes in
the world.
The best aromatherapists will ensure that your treatment is carefully,
sensitively and correctly managed .
